In the Upper Peninsula, we understand the importance of maintaining our environment. We live here because of our beautiful surroundings, yet they are at major risk.

It becomes more apparent in the summer, but illegal dumping is a serious issue. With so much undeveloped land in the U.P., it is not hard to find a place to get rid of bulky items that would cost money to take to the dump or dispose of properly. Many do not realize the negative impact this can have on the lush forests we take for granted.

For those interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle and preventing unnecessary waste and pollution in the West End, here are some simple ways to start!

  • Plogging! (The jogging and picking up garbage international phenomenon)
  • Carpool, walk, or ride your bike to your destination instead of driving alone
  • Donating or volunteering time to environmental organizations
  • Recycling. Visit Recycle 906 to learn what you can recycle in Marquette County and the recent switch to single stream recycling
  • Finally fix that leaky faucet. Leaking faucets waste both water and money
  • Plant a tree
  • Use a reusable bottle instead of plastic for the day
  • Change your lightbulbs to more energy efficient ones
  • Pick up liter. Don't walk by that wrapper, pick it up!
  • Enjoy nature! (Go on a hike, to the park, etc.)

Challenge yourself! Even choosing just one activity on one given day is a wonderful way to help contribute to your community. The Upper Peninsula is one of the most pristine, beautiful places on Earth, and we would like to keep it that way. Here's to a more sustainable West End!
